Alan looked over at his mother and sighed when she set a glass of water, a cup of coffee, and a bottle of pain pills next to him.

“Who called, and why are you lying to them?” Dottie demanded. When her son glared at her, she shook her head at him. “That’s not how this works, Alan. Yes, I’m your mother, but you’ve been here since John and Astrid’s wedding. You’re not working, you’re not going home, and you’re drinking yourself to sleep each night. This isn’t you. It’s been almost a week, and you missed the ride we took for Memorial Day. It’s time to spill.”

She got her own cup of coffee and quickly joined him at the table.

“Janice doesn’t want to marry me,” Alan mumbled into his cup.

“Did you ask her, and she refused you?”

“No, but you heard her when Justin said we should all get married at once, she said no.”

“That’s what this snit you’re in is all about?” Dottie gave him the stink-eye, then threw her head back and laughed. She laughed harder at his wince.

“I’m not in a snit,” he growled at her, then scowled as he sipped his coffee. “You heard her, she said she wouldn’t marry me.”

“What I heard her say was that she needed to talk to you first. Since moving to North Dakota, I’ve gotten to know all the ladies of Boswell. I don’t know if you know this, but I take one of them out to lunch each week in order to get to know them. I’m not going to tell you what I know Janice is going through, but I understand why she wants to hold off on marriage at this moment in time. You’ll have to talk it over with her. Let me warn you though.”

“What?” Alan demanded after several minutes of silence.

“Janice is a smart woman, I mean really, really smart. She’s got goals, and she’s doing everything in her power to obtain them. She’s going to make waves, and I applaud her for her path in life. If you can’t be there to support her, then it’s all on you. I love you, Alan, but in my personal opinion, if you mess this up with Janice, then it’s all on you. You’ll have no one else to blame, and I will support Janice.”

“But, I’m your son.”

“You are, but you’re being a big baby right now. I don’t know who called you, but you lied through your teeth telling the person on the other end of the phone that you’ve been working at Chuck’s new house. If the person you lied to knows Chuck, then they should know the house is already done and has been for months. You don’t have to answer, but who did you lie to.”

“Morgan,” Alan sighed as he scrubbed his face. “She wanted to know where I’ve been for the last week.”

“And you lied to her. What if she needed you? What if anyone needed you, especially Janice? What if they think you’re lying dead in a ditch somewhere?”

“I never thought of it that way.
